BC, Riga, 28.08.2014.Print version

The Latvian national men's basketball team beat Romania 82-70 (22-16, 15-21, 27-18, 18-15) in their last qualification match for the 2015 European Men's Basketball Championships (EuroBasket 2015) on Wednesday, informs LETA.

The Latvian team was victorious in all six qualification round matches, qualifying for EuroBasket 2015.

Janis Blums was the highest scorer for Latvia with 15 points yesterday, Janis Strelnieks and Dairis Bertans each scored 13 points and Kristaps Janicenoks added 11 points.

As reported, Latvia opened the qualification campaign with a 62-50 win over Sweden. In the next qualification games, Latvia beat Slovakia 86-66, Romania 88-65, and, in the second round of the qualification games, Latvia again beat Sweden 79-76, and Slovakia 89-65.

Latvia has therefore placed first in Group F with six wins in as many games. Romania is second with four wins, Sweden third with one victory, whereas Slovakia has lost all of its qualification matches.

The winners of the seven qualification groups, as well as the six best runners-up will qualify for EuroBasket 2015.

The host for the 2015 championships has not been decided yet. In 2011, FIBA Europe had decided that EuroBasket 2015 would be held in Ukraine, however, it decided this past March that the tournament would not take place in Ukraine because of the political and financial crisis in the country. There are currently eight countries, including Latvia, vying for the right to host the championship.

The roster of the Latvian squad for the EuroBasket 2015 qualification tournament: Janis Strelnieks, Janis Blums, Dairis Bertans, Ingus Jakovics, Aigars Skele, Kristaps Janicenoks, Janis Timma, Mareks Mejeris, Rolands Freimanis, Kaspars Berzins, Martins Meiers, Ronalds Zakis and Ronalds Smits.
