Latvian U-18 men's basketball team wins Lithuanians

The Latvian under-18 (U-18) men's basketball team kicked off the second group stage of this year's European U-18 Men's Basketball Championships by shocking Lithuania 78:76 on Monday, informs LETA.


The Latvian squad was down by 22 points at one stage of the match, but a stunning 19-1 in the final five minutes of the game gave the Latvians an important victory in its fight for a quarterfinal spot.


The highest scorer for Latvia was Rihards Lomazs with 25 points, followed by Kristaps Grinbergs with 15 points.


As reported, Latvia finished in second place in its preliminary round group to advance to the tournament's second group stage, or qualification round.


Latvia will play its next group match tonight against Croatia, and on Wednesday against France. A win in any one of the next two group matches will see Latvia through to the quarterfinals.


The top four finishers in the two qualification round groups will advance to the quarterfinals.

At last year's U-18 European Championships, Latvia finished in 4th place.


The roster of the Latvian U-18 men's basketball team participating at this year's European Championships is as follows: Ricards Melderis, Rauls Avenitis, Ervins Meznieks, Davis Cima, Dzeiks Eduards Krumins, Rudolfs Stradnieks, Renars Birkans, Rihards Lomazs, Arturs Grinbergs, Klavs Cavars, Zigmars Raimo and Rinalds Malmanis.
