BC, Riga, 18.07.2014.Print version

German director and filmmaker Peter Grimm has made a full-length documentary about the Latvian national guerillas called ''Mezabralis. Iles bunkura partizani'' (Forest Brothers. Ile bunker guerillas'', which tells the story about the post-WWII resistance to the second Soviet occupation of Latvia, the film's distributor Daris Delins informed LETA.

The film is orientated towards western viewers, but the film's authors said that it was important to also present their work in Latvia.

The film's debut in Latvia took place at the Occupation Museum, with the participation of two of the film's ''heros'' – Leons Garkalns and Juris Birgmanis.

After the film's premier, Grimm explained what motivated him to make a film about the Latvian guerillas. ''I grew up in East Germany, in Berlin. I witnesses the occupation, and as a student I was involved in activities against the regime. Later, in 1991, I had the opportunity to visit Lithuania together with a German parliamentarian delegation. After that, we arrived in Riga. Here I heard about the Latvian national guerilla movement, and thought this is a story that should be told to the world. It was also important to interview those who participated in the guerillas movement, because these persons will not be with us for too long,'' Grimm pointed out.

The documentary is in Latvian, Germany, English, Lithuanian and Estonia and it is planned to be demonstrated on Baltic television channels this year. After that, the film will be released on DVD and available for purchase on-line.
