5th Saeima deputy and longtime Riga city councilman Dainis Stalts, born 1939, died Saturday as his son, Davis, reported to LETA.

First and foremost, Stalts was a key figure in Latvia's so-called "singing revolution" as founder and leader of the seminal folklore group, "Skandinieki". His unbending stance in the fight for freedom in the late 1980s-early 90s became a symbol of the nation, ultimately earning him the highest honor - the Order of the Three Stars.
