Archaeological excavations started in Lithuanian Snipiskes

BC, Vilnius, 23.07.2008.Print version

The apartment building complex of King Mindaugas in Snipiskes is surrounded with many disagreements on the assumed Jewish cemetery that was situated there. On Wednesday, archaeological excavations have to begin. In the end of July geophysical analyses of that area were finished, writes ELTA.

First of all, the territory pointed by Israeli geophysicists of 4x4 has to be excavated. It is possible that several more areas of similar size will have to be excavated.

The excavation area will be secured by the police.

It is expected that in the mid August, the Israeli company Geotec, having taken into consideration results of geophysical analyses and archaeological excavations, will present the conclusions about the borders of Snipiskes Jewish cemetery to Lithuanian geological Service, which was assigned by the Lithuanian Government and already in May signed an agreement with Geotec for the implementation of these works.

The expenses of the investigation will be covered by the Lithuanian Government. The Fond of Reserves allocated 353,000 litas (102,236 euros) for this.
