Riigikogu might convene for an extra session on Thursday

BC, Tallinn, 18.06.2013.Print version

Estonian government coalition parties made a proposal to convene for this Thursday extra sessions of the Riigikogu, to approve, among other things, the controversial new basic school and high school law, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Riigikogu speaker Ene Ergma said that the pro Patria and Res Publia Union and Reform Party factions apply for convening two extra sessions, first for Thursday at 5 p.m. and the second a half an hour after the end of the first extra session. The Riigikogu will have the last full session before its summer break on Thursday.

The government had a cabinet meeting on Monday where it took out the financing part out of the basic school and high school law so that the law could ne approved of before summer. It is critical to approve of the law before the start of the academic year on September 1 so that pupils and teachers would know how their school year would be organised. The discussions over financing would then continue in autumn.
