Police: drowning victim is Latvia’s ice hockey player Pelss

BC, Riga, 17.06.2013.Print version

The body of the young man found Friday night in the Daugava River near Vansu Bridge in Riga has been identified as the missing Kristians Pelss, police confirmed Saturday afternoon, writes LETA.

Pelss, a promising hockey player, apparently was the man seen early June 11 jumping into the river from Akmens Bridge.

As reported, Dean Blundell of the Toronto radio-station 102.1 ''The Edge'', Friday made an insensitive joke about the disappearance of Latvian ice hockey player Kristians Pelss.

In wake of the reaction and the news that Pelss' body has been found, Blundell has issued an apology for his inappropriate comments. Saying he should have been better informed about what has happened, Blundell's "thoughts are with [Pelss'] family and friends."

This according to his Twitter profile.

On his broadcast, Blundell reported the news on Pelss, then said: ”How much must it suck playing hockey in Edmonton when you . . . I’m not going back. I mean, you’d rather jump off a bridge in like a war-torn country in a freezing cold river than go back to Edmonton. Shame. I hope they find him. I’ve been to Edmonton. I know what that guy’s talking about (laughs).”

The joke drew negative reaction from bloggers and the media in North America, many saying that the comments were ''shocking'' and ''disgraceful''.
