Interdisciplinary exhibition "Medicine at the Opera" in Riga

BC, Riga, 25.03.2013.Print version

Over centuries the profession and status of a doctor have changed in the society. It is also evidenced by the modern popular opera shows, starting with the 18th century operas like "The Barber of Seville" and "The Elixir of Love", where doctor is presented like a charlatan, until the 20th century opera "Vocek" by A. Berg, where doctor performs experiments with the human body and mind, informs liveriga.com.

By visiting this unique interdisciplinary exhibition, the curtain will be drawn to reveal a stage where the story of a doctor will be illustrated by exhibits of the museum — tools of a barber, ingredients of the elixir of love, and tools for diagnosing illnesses. The exhibition is a splendid pleasure of art, sound, light, and beautiful costumes.

Director of the Latvian National Opera and director of operas, Andrejs Žagars: "Medicine and health are essential ingredients of the life of the society and separate individuals, this is the reason why it also can be seen at different levels on the artistic reflection of the opera genre. Such an interdisciplinary investigation between such distant disciplines, as it seems from the first sight, is a remarkable and unique phenomenon in the whole world providing a look into the opera genre from a different point of view."
