Out of all eurozone countries, residents of Latvia were the least supportive of increasing the retirement age, according to the latest survey conducted by the Eurobarometer, cites LETA.

Despite the fact that the majority of EU citizens were not in support of pushing up retirement age, about four out of ten respondents from Luxembourg, Finland, Ireland, and Austria believe that increasing the retirement age would improve the viability and stability of the retirement system.

Residents of Italy – 79%, Spain – 80%, Portugal – 81%, and Latvia – 83% were the least supportive of increasing the retirement age.

The latest Eurobarometer survey was carried out in 28 European Union member states in August 6-8, 2014. The survey in Latvia was carried out by TNS Latvia.
