The head of the European People's Party's (EPP) Group at the European Parliament Manfred Weber, who is participating in a party leadership meeting in Jurmala this week, told LETA yesterday that the European Union's growth and stability are the most important things which need to be achieved at the moment.

Speaking about problems related to avoidance of paying taxes, Weber said that this is something European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis has emphasized, and is currently one of the most important matters being tackled.

''European Commission President Juncker already last week offered very specific steps on how to deal with this problems, which is now in the hands of EU members,'' Weber explained, while at the same time saying that he understands that the dissatisfaction expressed by EU residents, that small and medium sized companies must pay taxes, but such corporations like Amazon, Google and other sometime attempt to avoid paying taxes.

Asked about next week's confidence vote against Juncker at the European Parliament after it was revealed that 15 EU members have granted substantial tax breaks to international companies, Weber pointed out that the most important thing at the moment is the fact that Juncker has come out with specific initiatives to tackle this problem.

''At the same time, we must also think about the international dimension – Russia and the events in Ukraine,'' he added.

As reported, the EPP Group is holding meetings in Jurmala this week to discuss economic reforms of the European Union and political developments in Ukraine.
