More than 20,000 Latvian citizens were born outside Latvia in 10 years

In a time period between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2013, a total of 21,168 citizens of Latvia were registered in Latvian consular representations in the European Union, European Economic Area, and Switzerland, the European Latvians Association (ELA) informed LETA.

In order to better plan the Latvian education process among Latvian communities in Europe, ELA turned to the Defense Ministry of Latvia requesting information on the number of Latvian citizens born in Europe between 2004 and 2014.

 

The Defense Ministry provided information on Latvian citizens who were born in the European Union, European Economic Area, and Switzerland in a time period between January 1, 2004 and December 31. Data indicates that for the past ten years, the majority of Latvian citizens were born in Great Britain – 11,140, Ireland – 4,025, and Germany – 1,220.

 

The smallest number was registered in Croatia – five, Slovenia – one, and Romania – one.

 

The number of Latvian citizens born in Estonia was 691, in Lithuania – 80.
