During the first nine months of 2014 mortality decline was observed in Latvia. Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that 21 155 deaths were registered in the country, which is 387 fewer than in the first nine months of 2013. However, the number of deaths increased in September.

2 321 people deceased last month, which is 129 more than in September 2013.

In September 1 952 newborns were registered in the country, which is 143 more than in September 2013. During the first nine months of 2014, 16 320 newborns were registered in the country, which is 719 babies more than in the corresponding period of 2013.

Taking into account the fact that the number of births is still lagging behind the number of deaths, natural increase in Latvia remains negative. The number of population in Latvia on 1 October 2014 accounted for 1 million and 991.8 thousand.
