In a United Nations global survey, in tandem with "HelpAge International", the so-called aging index was tabulated after examining the situation in 96 countries, informs LETA.

The most favorable existence for the elderly is in Norway, but Latvia ranked 35th, albeit climbing 10 positions compared to last year's index. Lithuania was #60, Estonia – #20.

The index focuses on four areas: income security, health care, individual opportunity and environmental conditions.

The countries with the best quality of life for seniors (over 60), ranking after Norway are Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and Germany.

Latvia was 35th, but the most negative situation among all surveyed nations is in Afghanistan.

The map shows how countries are ranked in the Global AgeWatch Index. Countries are ranked from 1 to 96, with 1 being the highest rank. The higher the rank, the better the quality of life for older people. Colours on a spectrum from dark green to dark red represent the ranking from 1 to 96. Grey is used for countries where there is not enough data to include them in the Index.
