In 10 years, 439.5 thousand persons emigrated and 107.2 thousand immigrated in Lithuania

Statistics Lithuania informs that an annual publication International Migration of the Lithuanian Population 2013 has been released. The publication presents statistical information on international migration processes and their influence on the demographic development, labour market and standard of living.

The social and economic factors analysed are those which determined the inclination of the residents of Lithuania to migrate. The socioeconomic characteristics of international migrants are presented.

 

In 2013, international net migration remained negative as the number of emigrants exceeded that of immigrants by 16.8 thousand. Over the last ten years (2004–2013), 439.5 thousand persons emigrated and 107.2 thousand immigrated. In the context of other EU member states, Lithuania is distinguished by the one of the largest negative net migration indicators per 1000 population.

 

In 2013, 38.8 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania; there were 13.1 emigrants per 1000 population. Against 2012, the number of emigrants decreased by 2.3 thousand (5.6%). In 2004–2013, the number of male and female emigrants amounted to 220.1 thousand (50.1%) and 219.4 thousand (49.9%) respectively. In 2013, the number of emigrants who chose the United Kingdom as their destination of emigration amounted to 17.9 thousand, Ireland – 3.3 thousand, Norway and Germany – 3 thousand each. In 2013, one-fifth (19.8%) of all emigrants were aged 20–24, 18.4% – 25–29, 13.2% – 30–34 (in 2012, 20.5, 20, 12.3% respectively). In 2013, 81.8% of working-age emigrants had been unemplo­yed for one year and longer prior to their departure (in 2012, 75.4%). More than half (60.1%) of working-age emigrants who had been unemployed for one year and longer prior to their departure were aged 20–34.
