According to Statistics Lithuania, the number of members of political parties increased by more than 6,000 in 2013 and reached 114,100 people by the end of the year. In other words, 4.7% of all adults were members of political parties, informs LETA/ELTA.

At the same time trade unions shrank in size by 6.4%. In late 2013 they had 98,800 members or 8.3% of all hired employees.

Similar trends are noticeable throughout the last five year period.

In spite of the growing ranks of political parties, their funds fell by one fourth to LTL 25.2 million (EUR 7.3 million). Three quarters of the amount were governmental grants, one tenth was private contributions, another 7% were collected through membership fees.

Funds of trade unions increased by more than 6% and stood at LTL 15.3 million (EUR 4.4 million). Membership payments accounted for 61.7% of the funds.

The number of members of businessmen's and employers' associations increased by 1,800. In 2013 these associations united 13,900 legal persons which accounted for 15.3% of all operating entities. Funds of the associations grew by LTL 46.6 million (EUR 13.5 million) or 36.6% to reach LTL 173.8 million (EUR 50.3 million). Similarly as in previous years the funds primarily came from membership fees.

Funds of unions, clubs, communities, public organisations and similar associations in 2013 increased by LTL 66 million (EUR 19.1 million) to LTL 306.5 million (EUR 88.7 million). More than one third of funds were from charity, donations and contributions. One fifth of finances were allocated by the European Union funds. One eighth came from the national budget.
