In January – August, number of Latvian residents decreased by 4 426

In August 2014, 1 880 newborns were registered in the country, which is 22 more than in August 2013. Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that in the first eight months of 2014, 14 368 babies were registered in Latvia, which is 576 newborns more than in the corresponding period of 2013.

2 254 marriages were concluded in August, which is 59 marriages fewer than in August 2013. In the first eight months there were 8 440 marriages registered in Latvia, which is 324 marriages more than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

 

The number of deaths decreased in August. 2 047 people passed away last month, which is 67 persons fewer than in August 2013. During the first eight months of this year 18 794 persons deceased, which is 516 persons fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013.

 

With the number of births lagging behind the number of deaths, natural increase in Latvia remains negative. In January – August 2014, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, the number of Latvian residents decreased by 4 426 (in January – August 2013 – by 5 518).
