The comparison of Statistics Estonia data of the first half of the year 2014 and last year shows that the Estonian exports to Russia have declined by 41.3 million euros, or 9.3%, LETA/Postimees Online cites the Statistics Estonia blog.

The decline in exports has mainly been influenced by exports of chemicals industry, live animals and animal products.

Estonia's exports of goods to Russia in the first half of last year totalled 655.7 million and this year 614.4 million euros, which in both cases accounted for 10% of Estonia's total exports of goods, writes in the statistics blog Leading Statistician Evelin Puura. In the second half of 2013, exports to Russia grew and were 748.4 million euros, accounting for 12% of Estonia's total exports.

The fall of Estonian exports to Russia has been affected most in a year by the exports of products of the chemical or allied industries (including organic chemicals, dyes, photographic chemicals), which fell by more than 20 million euro. Export downturn has been impacted in a major way by agricultural produce, live animals and animal products (including live animals, meat, fish, milk and dairy products), the exports of which has fallen more than 12 million euro.

For Estonia as a European Union border state, re-export is characteristic. In exports to Russia, the share of re-export has for years been high. Both in 2013 and during the first half of 2014, goods of Estonian origin formed only about a quarter of total exports to Russia. Almost a half of goods exported to Russia were mechanical equipment, agricultural and food products.

99.3 million euros worth of agricultural and food products were exported to Russia in the first half of 2013, while the share of goods of Estonian origin was 43%. In the first six months of 2014, 102 mln euros worth of these goods were exported from Estonia to Russia but the amount of products of Estonian origin was 1.4 times lower than last year.
