President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite introduced members of the Government with her insights regarding priorities for the new political season. They are comprised of seven sets of tasks, related to domestic and external political challenges, reports LETA/ELTA.

After the meeting with the Cabinet, President Grybauskaite held a joint press conference with Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius. She noted that the next year is going to be significant because of geopolitical challenges and the upcoming municipal election.

"It is crucial for all elements of the government to find an agreement on key questions," said Grybauskaite.

The head of state presented seven sets of tasks to the Government.

The first one is augmentation of Lithuania's defence: ensuring funding of the national defence, readiness to repel attacks, establishment of Cyber Security Centre.

The second one is enhancement of energy independence. The president emphasised the necessity to ensure timely launch of LNG terminal. Grybauskaite obligated the prime minister to continue other strategic projects related to gas and electricity supply. She also noted the need to complete the heating sector reform.

Third task for the Government is related to the 2015 budget, which "has to be based on the principle of well being at the same time maintaining responsible fiscal policy.

The president also highlighted the need to ensure transparent use of funds and apply anti-corruption measures. Grybauskaite emphasised the need to assess the impact of Russian sanctions on 2015 budget.

The euro introduction was also addressed. The president said the adoption has to run smoothly and price rise must be prevented.

The fifth task for the Government is the reduction of social exclusion and implementation of commitments related to pensions. Lowest social benefits and salaries have to be increased.

The sixth goal is to reduce the impact of Russia's embargo on Lithuanian economy, businesses and labour as well as employment levels. To help businesses find new, transparent and stable markets. To negotiate and seek for compensations for losses from European funds.

Lastly, the president said attention has to be devoted to the country's regions, where ethnic minorities are prevalent. Grybauskaite raised the idea to prepare a special programme for eastern Lithuania and allocate funding. According to the president, what done after independence allowed the region to grow and if Lithuania will not invest in it, then others will.
