Estonian inhabitants are among the least frequent train riders in Europe after Romanians and Lithuanians, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Annually, each inhabitant of Estonia makes an average of three train journeys with the total length of 182 kilometres, which is 13 times less than in Switzerland.

Switzerland is the world champion in this regard, the inhabitants of which made an average of 53 train trips in 2013, travelling 2,307 kilometres. These data was presented yesterday by the Swiss Public Transportation Information Service (LITRA), based on the Paris-based International Union of Railways statistics.

Switzerland is followed by Japan with 1,912, France with 1,301, Austria with 1,280, Denmark with 1,190 and Britain with 1,063 kilometres. The average annual number of train journeys by the Japanese was higher than in Switzerland, however – 69 versus 53.

However, it should be noted that the Swedes are making an average of only three train trips a year, but they travel 644 kilometres altogether.
