The number of foreign travelers to Latvia has increased steeply in the first quarter this year, which is mostly thanks to the authorities' measures aimed at fostering tourism to Latvia, informs NOZARE.LV/LETA reffering to the State Tourism Development Agency's tourism market expert Lelde Benke.

According to the Central Statistical Bureau's data, a total of 348,500 foreign tourists stayed in Latvian hotels in the first quarter of the year, which is 15.7 percent more than in the first quarter of 2013, and the average duration of a visit to Latvia increased 3 percent.

The association Lauku celotajs (Rural Traveler) President Asnate Ziemel notes that the number of tourists from Germany decreased in Latvia in the past several years, but the trend was reversed in the first quarter this year, when the number of German travelers to Latvia increased steeply. Latvia has also become more popular with travelers from Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, whereas the number of Scandinavian tourists visiting Latvia has been steady for several years now.
