Norway registers highest HDI; Latvia 48th - United Nations

The highest Human Development Index (HDI) has been registered in Norway, while the lowest - in several African countries, according to the United Nations Development Program's Human Development Report, informs LETA.

Among 187 countries in the world, Latvia is ranked 48th, coming out as one of the 49 countries with very high human development.


Estonia is ranked 33rd, while Lithuania - 35th.


Norway is the leader in terms of the HDI, coming out 1st on the list, followed by Australia and Switzerland.


The top ten countries in terms of the HDI, are the Netherlands, the United States, Germany, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore and Denmark.


The bottom five countries in terms of the HDI, are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Chad and Sierra Leone.


The United Nations' HDI is based on many criteria, including welfare, life expectancy, education, gender equality and political freedom.
