Straujuma: ministers’ salaries have to be adequate compared to other EU countries

BC, Riga, 16.07.2014.Print version
The issue concerning ministers' salaries needs to be solved sooner or later, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) told member of the press yesterday, cites LETA.

However, she is not certain whether the matter will be handed to the Cabinet of Ministers for review. According to Straujuma, it would be more appropriate if Saeima decided on ministers' salaries, as ministers should not be able to decide on their own salaries.

The issue will be discussed with the ruling coalition after Straujuma's meeting with the State Audit Office. "It would be odd if the government increased its own salaries," Straujuma said.

Straujuma plans to meet with the head of the State Audit Office, State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and State Chancellery representatives in order to discus this matter.

Nevertheless, Straujuma admitted that the issue concerning ministers' salaries should be solved and that the salaries have to be adequate, as compared to other European Union countries.

She also stressed that it is difficult to find a person for the post of health minister three months before the Saeima elections, as this position offers neither motivation, nor an adequate salary.

Finance Minister Andris Vilks (Unity) previously indicated that the government's salaries are too low.
