On 1 January 2014, the population of the European Union was estimated at 507.4 million, compared with 505.7 million on 1 January 2013, reports LETA/ELTA.

The population increase is due to a natural increase of 80,000 and a net migration of 700,000, while the remainder is due to statistical adjustments, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union said.

As a long-term trend, the population of the countries making up the European Union has increased by around 100 million since 1960 (from 407 million to 507 million).

However, the number of population recorded in Lithuania on 1 January 2014 was 2.943 million. While on 1 January 2013 it was 2.971 million. Lithuania was third among the EU countries in three indicators: the highest number of deaths (14.0 percentage points), negative natural change of population (-3.9 percentage points) and the highest negative net migration (-5.7 percentage points)
