Jaunsleinis: demographics should be considered top priority in Latvia

BC, Riga, 27.06.2014.Print version
In planning state budget for the coming years, demographics should be put forward as a priority, not defense, Chairman of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments (LALRG) Andris Jaunsleinis said in an interview with LETA.

He believes that the government's attempts to improve the demographic situation have been trivial. Demographics is a matter of the country's existence, therefore, it ought to be the number one priority, Jaunsleinis is certain.

When asked if demographics should be more important than funding of defense, Jaunsleinis said that demographics is a crucial matter, although it is obvious that it is impossible to allot all budget funds to improve the demographic situation. Nevertheless, it is necessary to come to an agreement that demographics is an urgent problem and the government must do all it can to solve it.

"Things that are done at the moment to improve the situation are not enough for a problem such as demographics. We can help solve this problem on the municipal level, however, it requires certain resources," Jaunsleinis said. As an example he mentioned guarantees for young families that want to buy home.

Jaunsleinis does not deny that defense is an important matter, however, "the armed forces will not secure stability and existence of the country, it can be achieved only by its residents and their loyalty toward the state."
