Print versionOn May 4 in 1990, the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia was adopted – now a national celebration day in Latvia.

The Declaration was an important step in the long process of regaining Latvia's independence from the Soviet Union. Only after more than a year of uncertainty and threats of a military crackdown was the transition period of restoring independence finalized on August 21, 1991.
