In the first quarter this year 5068 newborns were registered in the country, which is 358 babies more than in the first three months of 2013. Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that, in March 1694 babies were registered in the country – 164 newborns more than in March 2013.

Birth rate growth trend has been observed over the past three years.

The number of marriages has also been growing. In the first quarter there were 1502 marriages registered in Latvia, which is 160 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In March there were 540 marriages registered, which is 40 more than in March 2013. Rise in the number of births and marriages can be explained with the fact that those born in the middle of the eighties are now 25 – 30 years old. This was a period when there were 41 thousand babies born, which is twice as many as in the last few years.

In the first quarter of 2014, 7413 persons passed away, which is 817 persons fewer than in the first quarter 2013. 2407 persons passed away in March.
