Civil servants' salaries in Lithuania to be compensated

BC, Vilnius, 17.04.2014.Print version
Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevicius has met the Constitutional Court's (KT) ruling on the compensation of civil servants' salaries with reserve, informs LETA/ELTA.

According to the prime minister, even though KT rulings have to be implemented, the Government will not rush to adopt compensation mechanism procedures.

"As far as I know, it is provided that economic and financial situation has to be taken into account. A mechanism has to be prepared which would reflect all compensation procedures over a defined period. The Ministry of Finance will begin work in accordance with the recommendations," Butkevicius told journalist on Wednesday.

The prime minister was unable to tell when the compensation procedures would be prepared but assured that the matter will not be rushed.

"Haste might result in negative outcome. (...) Convergence programme was approved today (April 16th). Certain macroeconomic forecasts will be taken into consideration and fiscal policies will be assessed. We have to evaluate the extent of economic growth and additional revenue," Butkevicius said.

The head of the Government added that in order to compensate civil servants' salaries, fiscal deficit will not be increased.
