EU recycled 42% waste in 2012; Latvia – only 16%

The European Union (EU) on the average recycles 42% of its total waste, however, Latvia only recycles 16%, according to a study by Eurostat, taking into account data from 2012, cites LETA.

34% of the EU's total waste ended up in landfills in 2012, 24% was burned, 27% was recycled, while 15% was turned into compost.

 

84% of Latvia's total waste ended up in landfills in 2012.

 

On the average, one person in Latvia produces less garbage than other Europeans.

 

In 2012, one Latvian resident on average produced 301 kilograms of garbage. In contrast, the EU average is 492 kilograms.

 

In Estonia, one resident on the average produced 278 kilograms of garbage in 2012, while in Lithuania – 449 kilograms.

 

Resident of Denmark produced the most garbage in 2012 – 668 kilograms per person.
