Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that 1574 babies were registered in Latvia in February 2014, which is 124 newborns more than in February 2013.

In the first two months this year there were altogether 3374 newborns registered, which is 194 babies more than in January and February 2013. This birth rate growth trend has been observed over the past three years.

The number of marriages is also growing. In February there were 509 marriages registered, which is 80 more than in February 2013. Rise in the number of births and marriages can be explained with the fact that those born in the middle of the eighties are now 25 – 30 years old. There were more than 40 thousand babies born between years 1983 and 1988, which is twice as many as in the last few years.

Mortality has also slightly dropped.  2276 persons passed away in February – 324 persons fewer than in February 2013.

Natural increase in Latvia is still negative. In February 2014, as the number of deaths exceeded the birth rate, the number of Latvian residents decreased by 702 (in February 2013 – by 1150).
