Dombrovskis: pre-crisis salaries led to economic non-competitiveness

BC, Riga, 19.06.2013.Print version
The demands of trade unions to restore salaries to the pre-crisis level cannot be supported, since these salaries were not sustainable, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) told the LNT morning show "900 sekundes" today, informs LETA.

Dombrovskis reminded that pre-crises salaries lost touch with productivity and led to economic non-competitiveness.

At the moment, various demands for budget increases exceed several hundred million lats, despite only tens of millions of lats available for redistribution.

As reported, the Latvian United Police Trade Union has sent a letter to Dombrovskis demanding to restore salaries and social guarantees for police officers, prison guards and firefighters to the pre-crisis level.

According to the trade union, State Police and State Fire and Rescue Service salaries were cut by 50 to 55 percent during the crisis. Moreover, police officers and firefighters were deprived of most social guarantees.

The Latvian Trade Union of Employees of State Institutions, Local Governments, Enterprises and Finance Sector is ready to stage protests, demanding equal social guarantees in state institutions.
