Economy Ministry of Latvia: work-force will have upper hand over employers from 2016

BC, Riga, 22.05.2013.Print version
The unemployment rate will continue to gradually reduce in the coming years, and by 2016 and 2017, there could be tension on the job market in Latvia, as the work-force will begin to have the upper hand over employers and pressure them to increase wages, Economy Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Vilnis Kirsis (Reform Party) said during a Saeima Parliamentary Inquiry Committee meeting today, informs LETA.

He pointed out that the demographic situation in coming years will become more of a hindrance, thus it is necessary to carry out education system reforms and stimulate re-emigration. Kirsis emphasized that more emphasis must also be put on expanding industry, and that the education of engineers must be supported, as there is no unemployment in this profession.

The committee meeting also reviewed a recent report from the World Bank about Latvia's employment situation. Welfare Ministry State Secretary Ieva Jaunzeme explained that it has become harder to involve older persons and persons with a low-education level in the job market. She explained that it is easier to involve, for example, educated mothers in the job market.

The committee's chairman Romualds Razuks (Reform Party) pointed out that the World Bank's report has dispelled several myths, like companies not being able to find adequate employees.
