A fifth of Lithuanian residents in 2012 had illegal income. The shadow labour market has been shrinking the last years; however, it still remains very large, although employers face hefty fines, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Kauno diena.

According to the results of the annual study of the Lithuanian Free Market Institute (LLRI), in 2012 a total of 22% of Lithuanian residents had illegal labour income. In the last four years, the shadow labour market has decreased twice, yet, compared to 2007, it grew twofold.

"According to our estimations, the shadow has been reduced compared to the heat of the crisis, yet, it still remains bigger than before the crisis," Monday said LLRI research department head Vytautas Zukauskas as he presented the study. Statistics about cash in circulation also signals that the share of illegal labour income is falling very reluctantly.

The Bank of Lithuania reports that in March, the share of cash in circulation in Lithuania increased by over LTL 155 million (EUR 45 million) and at the end of the months amounted to LTL 11.5 billion (EUR 3.3 billion). The trend of the growing share of cash in circulation has been present all last year.
