Financial institutions worry about the dependence of Lithuania’s export on the external economics

BC, Vilnius, 17.04.2013.Print version
Lithuanian financial institutions, surveyed by the Bank of Lithuania, are most worried about external risk sources: the escalation of the issue of the debts of the states of the European Union, also the possible drop in Lithuania's export if the growth of the world’s economy were to suddenly slow down, reports LETA the national bank of Lithuania.

Nevertheless, the probability of the manifestation of risks and their effect on the financial system are assessed more moderately than before – as can be seen in the results of the newest survey.

"We have noticed that the most attention is paid to external risk sources, and they are most difficult to affect in terms of minimizing risk. The renewal of Lithuania’s economy is evaluated more favorably. This was influenced by good economic results last year and one of the largest economic growth rates in the European Union is predicted for Lithuania," commented Gediminas Simkus, Director of the Financial Stability Department of the Bank of Lithuania, regarding the results of the survey.

Just two years ago macroeconomic risk was assessed as large, but according to the survey data, it is less than average. As the most likely source of risk respondents named the long-standing period of low interest rates in the financial markets; however, their influence was less than average.

Banks more often than other respondents were likely to assess credit risk as larger than average. In their opinion, this risk continues to be important due to psychological factors and problem loans that rose during the financial crisis.

Financial institutions also worry about complicated and long judicial processes in solving debiting lawsuits. They continue to be conservative: most surveyed financial institutions claim that their inclination to accept risk is small and will not increase in the coming six months. Regardless, the number of financial institutions, which think that in the future the risk accepted by them and other financial institutions can grow, is increasing.
