Number of thefts in Estonia fell by 13% in Q1, while number of frauds increased

According to the crime barometer, a total of 9,052 criminal offences were registered in the first three months of 2013 in Estonia, reports BC the Ministry of Justice.

This is by 518 offences (or 5%) less than during the same period of time last year.

 

“The decline in the overall number of registered criminal offences has been an expected trend in the context of the past few years, mostly due to the continued decline in the number of thefts. Unfortunately, the improvement of the overall economic situation has brought along an increase in the number of fraudulent acts committed,” stated the Minister of Justice Hanno Pevkur.

 

Crimes against property have fallen the most, most notably the number of thefts that has fallen by 539 incidents (by 13%). This is mostly due to the decline in the number of shoplifting offences. Thefts from vehicles and places of residence have also been registered less than last year.

 

The total number of crimes in the first quarter fell in the cases of 90 types of crime and increased in the cases of 72 types of crime.
