Latvian PM: indexing of pensions could resume in 2013, but only for small pensions

BC, Riga, 05.04.2013.Print version
The matter of indexing of pensions could be reviewed after the first half of the year, when the situation in the social budget becomes clearer, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) told reporters after a meeting with the Latvian Pensioners' Federation (LPF) yesterday, informs LETA.

However, even if there are funds for it, indexing of pensions could resume only for small pensions, said the prime minister, reminding that the matter can only reviewed in the context of budget capability.

LPF Chairman Andris Silins was pleased with the meeting, but admitted that his federation is not entirely satisfied with the possibility of resuming indexing of pensions this year only for small pensions. Nevertheless, he lauded the fact that several other matters requiring solutions were brought up, drawing attention to the main issue - improving the standard of living for pensioners with low income.

The federation also pointed out that it expects specific results in the nearest future, preferably by this year's municipal elections June 1.

Welfare Minister Ilze Vinkele (Unity), however, emphasized that the social budget is the decisive factor when deciding on resuming indexing of pensions, not upcoming municipal elections.

As reported, the Pensioners Federation's council decided in February to start a signature drive so indexing of pensions could resume in October 2013. Residents below the retirement age are also being encouraged to sign the petition.

Budget tax revenue plan for the first quarter of the year was implemented by 101%, Dombrovskis said yesterday following a meeting with President Andris Berzins. "There is a minimum surplus in the budget, therefore we currently see no additional budget funding opportunities at the moment," he said.
