Illegal labour increased three-fold in Lithuania in 2012

Petras Vaida, BC, Vilnius, 22.08.2012.Print version
In 2012, the instances of illegal labour increased three times compared with the same period last year.

However, a fight against illegal work has also been intensified. Deputy Minister of Social Security and Labour Audrius Bitinas says that in 2012 Labour Inspectorate transferred 195 cases within penalties of LTL 415,000 (EUR 120,192). It is 1.5 times more than the last year. Meanwhile, the number of inspections has increased three-fold, writes LETA/ELTA.

The deputy minister pointed out that the fight against illegal employment should rely on preventive measures rather than criminal sanctions.

Illegal work is most often used in the sectors of construction and agriculture. Mainly, during the warm season.

Bitinas also pointed out that there are some instances of illegally working foreigners from the third countries, but it is not a massive phenomenon.

Most often long-distance drivers or welders from Belarus and Russia come to Lithuania for illegal jobs.
