Estonia's inland bathing water quality is the best in Europe, sea water quality poorer

A total of 55 bathing waters were monitored in Estonia during the 2011 bathing season, of which 27 were coastal bathing waters and 28 were inland bathing waters (five on rivers; 23 on lakes). Some 92.9% of the inland bathing waters were of excellent quality in 2011. This is an increase of 21.5% compared to the previous year when 71.4% of the bathing waters met the guide values.
Germany and Austria followed in the top list, with 90.2% and 83.5% of inland bathing waters having excellent quality.
In Estonia, 48.1% of the coastal bathing waters were of excellent quality in 2011. This is a decrease of 22.3% compared to the previous year when 70.4% of the bathing waters met the guide values.
The top of this list included Cyprus (99.1%), Malta (97.7%) and Greece (94.1%) while Estonia was among the last ones in the list.
