Rimsevics: reducing unemployment one of the greatest challenges for the Latvian government

One of the greatest challenges faced by the Latvian government at the moment is to reduce unemployment in the country and organize successful retraining of the unemployed so they could re-enter the labor market, the Bank of Latvia President Ilmars Rimsevics said at the "Euromoney" conference in Vienna yesterday.

At the moment, the government is trying to organize training programs for people who have been left out of the job market. This is a major challenge, because it is very hard for someone who has been out of a job for more than a year to find a new one, writes LETA.

The government is attempting to introduce various educating programs for the unemployed, however, there is a wide gap between these programs and employers' needs, said Rimsevics. The more these programs are oriented toward employers' needs and wants, the greater the chance that the government will succeed, he said.

As reported, the registered unemployment level in Latvia at the end of December 2011 was 11.5 percent, the same as in November.
