Zatlers' party and Unity come to agreement on broad coalition in Latvia

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 04.10.2011.Print version
At their joint meeting yesterday, the Zatlers Reform Party and Unity decided to support establishment of a national consolidation government in Latvia, including both ideological adversaries – Harmony Center and All For Latvia!/TB/LNNK.

The Greens/Farmers Union would, however, not be included, as Zatlers' party was categorically opposed to this.

Valdis Zatlers commented to reporters afterward that many difficult decisions await the government and parliament, therefore such a political force as Harmony Center cannot be left in opposition, as it has so many mandates. Valdis Dombrovskis, one of Unity's leaders, said that in turn he sees no rational reason why the nationalist alliance should remain in opposition as it has backed many key issues in the past, writes LETA.

Both leaders advocated Harmony Center and All For Latvia!/TB/LNNK's shunning their heretofore "red lines", and working together in the interests of the nation.

Zatlers added: "In forming a national consolidation government, where both opposing sides would be together, we are symbolizing a new direction. It is an opportunity to achieve a turning point in politics and the consolidation of the community."
