Taliga: Estonian labour market to improve by H2 of 2011

Chairman of the Confederation of Trade Unions Harri Taliga stated that although the number of registered unemployed persons has fallen faster than expected, there is no cause for much optimism, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

Taliga commented that there are several factors causing the decline in the unemployment rate – the summer season works, actions taken by the Unemployment Insurance Fund, economic recovery that has been faster than expected –, but he nevertheless does not recommend excessive optimism.

“People are, after all, still being made redundant – perhaps not in great numbers at once and perhaps there are currently no major bankruptcy cases, but the truth is that the economic adjustment is still ongoing and I fear that we will not be able to speak about any real improvements on the labour market before the second half of 2011,” said the leader of trade unions.

He estimated that it would be approximately a year before the employment rate would start growing.

Taliga pointed out that the registered unemployment rate is only a formal indicator – if a person is no longer registered as unemployed because he or she fails to contact the Unemployment Insurance Fund, it does not mean that the person is no longer unemployed.
