The survey shows that drivers who exceed the speed limit do it because they enjoy driving fast. On the other hand, one-third of drivers usually try to observe the speed limit, whilst the remaining 40% observe the speed limit because they are afraid of being fined, writes LETA.
As the main reasons for speeding, drivers usually mention being in a hurry, carelessness and other drivers driving too slow. Another reason for regularly speeding is competing with other drivers, as well as stress and letting out anger.
The survey shows that there is much difference between male and female drivers. Male drivers drive faster and regularly exceed the speed limit. Every fifth male driver in Latvia exceeds the speed limit by at least 20 kilometers per hour, and are angered more often when they encounter slower drivers. Males also more often confuse the road for a racing track and let out their anger behind the wheel.
On the other hand, females are more disciplined drivers and do not exceed the speed limit as often as males, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate points out. In the survey, females point out that the main reason for speeding is carelessness, because they do not pay attention to the speedometer or road signs.
