SEZ manager Guntars Krievins previously informed that that the increased volume of cargo transshipments is a result of industrious activity – port's enterprises have invested in technologies and machinery, whereas Liepaja SEZ administration has taken care of developing the infrastructure, informs LETA.
The volume of liquid cargo handled grew by 33.6%. The largest part of liquid cargo is made up by oil products and crude oil. Bulk cargo remains the principal type of cargo, handled in Liepaja Port, it constitutes 45% of the total cargo volume and has increased by 16.2% in April. The amount of general cargo reloaded at the port remained at the same level as the year before.
In April 2008, 389,700 tons of cargo was handled at the port. Comparing with April 2007, the amount of cargo handled has grown by 13.2%. Liepajas osta LM registered the largest volume of cargo with 135,811 tons handled, which is 40.6% more than in the same period of time last year. The second largest handler of cargo was TransWide service with 79,604 tons – a 65.9% increase, comparing with the previous year – and DG Terminals, which handled 46,142 tons, which is a 49.2% increase.
This year, Liepaja Port plans to handle a total of five million tons of cargo. As Krievins points out, the prognosis is quite cautious, as in 2007 there were 4,04 million tons of cargo handled.
