The total fuel consumption in Latvia in the first three months of the year 2008 was 313,830 tons, which is 9,510 tons or 3% more than in the respective period of time last year, according to the State Revenue Service's data on the turnover of excise goods.

The State Revenue Service informs that, in total, comparing with the first quarter of 2007, the volume of oil products or fuel distributed has only increased by 3,190 tons or 2%. The volume of oil products, retailed to customers, increased by 23,220 tons or 34%, but the volume of oil products, used for the business or personal consumption and otherwise, decreased by 16,920 tons or 73%.

In total, 201,830 tons of fuel have been retailed this year. Comparing to the first quarter of last year, only the volume of the retailed diesel fuel increased: by 6,180 tons or 6%. Gasoline retail sales went down by 1,990 tons or 2% and the retail figures for gas fuel, went down 1,030 tons or 17%.

The State Revenue Service points out that in the first three months of this year, comparing with the respective period of time last year, the sales volume of the aviation fuel has increased significantly, which could be due to the development of Riga Airport.

In the first three months of this year, the volume of diesel fuel, distributed to the consumers, increased significantly – by 17,890 tons or 49%.

The growing number of retailed oil products and the fall in the volume of fuel, used for business consumption could be due to the changes in fuel use at Latvijas dzelzcels ("Latvian Railroad Company") and related enterprises.

51,070 tons of fuel were sold in wholesale trade, which is by 14,440 tons or 39% more than in the respective period of time in 2007.

The State Revenue Service informs that this year the diesel fuel and fuel oil wholesale trade figures have grown, whereas gasoline was sold less.

Actual excise tax income from oil products in the first quarter of this year was LVL 67 million, which is by LVL 10.6 million or 19% more than in the first quarter of 2007.
