At least 9% Covid-19 cases registered in Latvia are employees of medical institutions

BC, Riga, 28.09.2020.Print version
Of all registered Covid-19 cases, at least 128 or 9% of the persons are employees of medical institutions or medical personnel working in social care institutions, according to the informative report of the Ministry of Health, which is planned to be seen at a government meeting this week, writes LETA.

The report also states that the number of people treated with Covid-19 has increased in recent weeks. Cases of illness have been registered among the staff of the Emergency Medical Service, outpatient health care services, as well as at the Daugavpils Regional Hospital and North Kurzeme Regional Hospital.

So far, most cases of infection have been registered in Vidzeme Hospital. There have been 64 cases of Covid-19 registered in this facility, including 17 hospital staff, 20 patients, four of whom have died, and 27 family members of sick patients or staff.

In a total of 264 cases, or 18.6% at the time of the laboratory examination, persons infected with Covid-19 were asymptomatic, according to an informative report from the Ministry of Health, which is expected to be reviewed at the next government meeting.

Among symptomatic patients, the most common symptoms are fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, headache, muscle and joint pain and weakness.

Also, many patients also point to taste and smell disorders. Fewer patients complain of shortness of breath and chest pain, while a small proportion of patients experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Although children are affected differently from Covid-19 than adults, similar symptoms were previously seen in a study of children with Covid-19 at the Children's Clinical University Hospital. It concludes that young patients complain of prolonged fever, headache, joint pain, unexplained fatigue, and complete loss of smell after illness.

At the same time, the ministry's report examined the age dynamics of people who had been confirmed to have Covid-19. The age of the deceased patients ranged from 52 to 99 years, with a mean age of 75 years. Almost a quarter of all deaths were under the age of 60.

At least 32 who have died from Covid-19 had serious chronic illness.

According to the data of the CDC, so far 36 deaths have been registered in Latvia in persons who have been confirmed with Covid-19 infection. Overall, 2.4% of patients diagnosed with Covid-19 have died.

According to the report, Covid-19 cases do not currently place an additional burden on the healthcare sector. However, during the season of influenza and other acute respiratory infections, the load on the outpatient and inpatient health care sector may significantly increase, as well as the intensity of laboratory testing may increase, the ministry explains.

The report emphasizes that the biggest risk for the spread of Covid-19 in Latvia is the import of infections from abroad, therefore attention should be paid to the fact that persons who have entered Latvia from areas affected by Covid-19 observe the prescribed precautionary measures. Also, according to the ministry, it is necessary to continue monitoring the situation and be ready to react quickly.
