Number of young people in Estonia decreasing everywhere apart from Harju County

According to Statistics Estonia, there were 273,871 young people aged 7-26 living in Estonia as at the beginning of the year, making up 20.6 percent of the total population, and the number of young people increased on year only in Harju County, cites LETA/BNS.

Most young people live in Harju, Tartu and East-Viru counties and the least in Polva, Laane and Hiiu counties. In terms of percentage, Jogeva, Hiiu and Polva counties lost the most young people in the last year.

Ethel Maasing, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the number of young people living in Estonia has decreased by approximately 5,000 in five years. "The reason is that children born during the Singing Revolution have grown out of the age group of young people. In addition, children who were born in 2012, when almost 4,000 children less were born in Estonia than 20 years earlier, are entering the young age group," Maasing said.

Last year, the immigration of young people to Estonia remained at a similar level as in 2018, but approximately 1,000 more young people left Estonia. "In 2019, 4,283 people settled in Estonia and 3,675 young people aged 7-26 left here. In terms of numbers, most young people left Harju County to go abroad, but many of them also came there from other countries," Maasing said.

As a result of domestic migration, only Harju County and Tartu County won over young people last year, 1,358 and 45, respectively. Most young people left East-Viru, Polva, Jogeva and Valga counties as a result of domestic migration.
