In May, two times fewer marriages were registered in Latvia y-o-y

Traditionally summer is wedding season and increase in the marriage number may be observed already in May. Data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in May of this year 465 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 469 marriages or two times fewer than in May of 2019. Drop in the marriage number was caused by the emergency situation announced as of 13 March to limit spread of the COVID-13 virus.

In March, April and May of 2020 totally 1 485 marriages were registered – 813 marriages or 35.4 % fewer than over the respective months of 2019.




In Riga 118 marriages were registered in May, which is 2.5 times fewer than in May 2019. In March, April and May totally 544 marriages were registered in Riga – 291 marriages or 35 % fewer than over the respective months of 2019. Within the rest of the country 36 % fewer marriages were registered than in March, April and May of 2019.

In May 2020, 1 464 newborn were registered in Latvian civil registry offices, which is 4.4 % fewer than in the corresponding month of the previous year.




Over the month, 2 168 deaths were registered, which is 3.3 % fewer than in May a year ago. Moreover, 704 people more died than were born.




In May, 465 marriages were registered, which is 469 marriages fewer than in the corresponding month of the year before.




On 1 June 2018, the provisional number of inhabitants in Latvia accounted for 1 million 902 thousand.
