Latvia ranks 31st in 2018 Global Peace Index

Latvia ranks 31st in the 2018 Global Peace Index, climbing one position from last year, and still slightly higher than its Baltic neighbors, according to the Global Peace Index released annually by a global think tank, the Institute for Economics and Peace, cites LETA.

The rankings of Lithuania and Estonia have also improved compared to 2017. Estonian ranks 33rd, climbing three positions, and Lithuanian is two positions higher thank last year, ranking 35th in the 2018 Global Peace Index.


Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined at the top of the index by New Zealand, Australia, Portugal, Denmark, Canada, the Czech Republic, Singapore, Japan and Ireland.


Syria remains the least peaceful country in the world, ranking 163rd, followed by Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq, Yemen, and Lybia, the Institute for Economics and Peace said.


Russia has dropped one notch to the 154th place, while Ukraine climbed two positions to the 152nd place.


The 2018 Global Peace Index has decreased by 0.27 percent. The situation improved in 71 countries of 163 but deteriorated in 92 countries. Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world, while the Middle East and North Africa regions are least peaceful in the world.


The Global Peace Index released annually since 2007 is based on 23 indicators across three key domains: Societal Safety and Security, Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict, and Militarization.
