PrintCargo turnover at Port of Riga increased by 3% in first four months

In the first four months of this year, 9.866 million tons of cargo was handled at the Port of Riga, which is a 3 percent increase on the results of the respective period of 2008, as the port's strategic planning and project management department informed LETA.

The largest turnover increase was observed in liquid cargo handled at the port, which increased by 40 percent in the first four months of the year and reached 2.256 million tons. This year, 2.244 million tons of oil products have been handled at the port, which is 40.5 percent more when compared to January-April 2008.

 

On the other hand, there was a 1.4 percent increase in bulk cargo handled at the port, reaching 6.417 million tons.

 

Most of the bulk cargo handled was coal – 5.07 million tons, or 12.4 percent more than in the first four months of 2008. The port also handled 642,600 tons of chemicals, which is 8.6 percent more than in the first four months of 2008.

 

The Port of Riga also provided services to 117,143 passengers in the first four months of the year, which is an increase of 36.7 percent on last year.

 

As reported, in 2008, the Port of Riga handled a total of 29.56 million tons of cargo, which is 14 percent more when compared to 2007.
