Estonian analyst: faster increase in goods prices than services natural due to excise duty

BC, Tallinn, 08.11.2017.Print version
The Estonian consumer price index in October 2017 fell 0.1 percentage points compared to September 2017 but climbed 3.8% compared to October 2016 and Heido Vitsur, economic adviser to the president, said that the faster increase in the prices of goods than the prices of services is completely natural as the changed tax rates first and foremost affect the prices of goods, informs LETA/BNS.

"Price growth has always been affected for the most part one and the same factors or the increase in the prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco between 10.6% and 12.1% and the increase in the price of other food by 5.8 to 7.9%," Vitsur told BNS.

"Price growth compared to the previous year remains at a stable high, at a rate only slightly lower than 4%, in October it was 3.8%, in September 3.7% and in August 3.9%. Price fluctuations month over month as expected have remained within a few percentage tenths," Vitsur said.

Vitsur said that the price growth between 2 to 5% has also been supported by an increase in the price of transport and housing costs. The only goods group, the prices of which have remained at a stable low compared to the previous year, is communications services.

"While the dynamic of most prices has in general been known in advance at all times, then food, especially the inevitabilities of a 59% increase in butter prices, 33% increase in potato prices and 24% increase in vegetable prices in October only came to light in fall," Vitsur said.

The Estonian consumer price index in October 2017 fell 0.1%age points compared to September 2017 but climbed 3.8% compared to October 2016. Consumer prices have risen 3.3% in the first 10 months of this year, consumer price growth in the eurozone countries on average decelerated to 1.4% in October.
