Latvian judges give their independence lowest rating among 26 European countries

Latvian judges have given their independence the lowest rating compared to judges in the 26 European countries, which participated in the survey carried out by the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary (ENCJ), informs LETA.

Latvian judges rated their independence at 7.4 points on the 10-point scale, which is the lowest score among the countries participating in the survey. Albania had the second lowest rating at 8.1. Lithuanian judges rated their independence at 8.2, and in Estonia the rating was 9.



 

As many as 39% of Latvian judges think that the media can inappropriately influence decisions or actions of judges in their country. Concerns of inappropriate influence on part of the media is the highest among judges in Italy (64%).

 

Latvian judges also admitted inappropriate pressure from the parties to the court proceedings and their lawyers as well as from the court management.

 

In Latvia, 224 judges or 39.5% of all judges in the country took part in the survey.
